Latino Heritage

To honor our elders
to preserve our collective past
to help educate all involved in our projects
to provide positive educational outreach for all in our community.

The mission of the organization … the intent of our projects …

We provide positive educational outreach on the history and culture of Latinos while working in collaboration with other groups in the area. People come together and reflect the diversity that is Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley.

One way we celebrate history…

We offer historical education by showcasing diverse groups of positive role models. People have a good time while they are learning about each other and history at the community level. Music, dance, and comida! Think of this as a family party or get together - with a really big family.

Our community fair, our jamaica …

In the 18th century the word jamaica was used in Mexico to describe a community fair. The term was commonly used in Pasadena in the 19th and 20th centuries. In the 20th century churches continue to have jamaicas in places as close as East L.A. and as far away as Colorado. We continue this practice locally.

Living history means …

We often have an element of living history as part of our celebrations. We include cultural historians who practice or have researched crafts, games, or activities that have been a part of our history. Some participants are re-enactors who dress is the clothes of a particular era and share information from that time period. Adults and children have had a chance to learn about the history of the arts and skills, and then actively participate.

Our roots are from…

Oh, so many places. Parade participants reflect traditional folkloric costumes, customs, and historical traditions. The diversity of our roots is reflected in the performances and presentations on stage; we have shared the dance of Armenia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, the Philippines, and the Pacific Islands; all have contributed to or have close ties to Latino culture.
